Eric Giuily, president and chief executive officer of Publicis Consultants Worldwide
Expo 2010 will attract massive attention across the planet
World Expo 2010 has two most attractive points. The first one lies in its host city: Shanghai. There are huge interests, especially in Europe and the US, in China, Shanghai and their developments. When we were in charge of the China - France Cultural Years project from 2004 to 2006, we could only acknowledge the huge interest and coverage that Shanghai and China received from world media.
The second point is the theme of the Expo, "Better City, Better Life." It is a very important and interesting topic for most countries. Many countries are assessing and working on how to improve individual lives in cities.
In the context of the economic crisis, this theme is even more relevant as people might be putting less importance and interests on their financial lives, but more on the cities, their collective lives and daily lives.
For Shanghai Expo, Publicis Consultants was for example in charge of the press relations for Shanghai Expo during the Expo promotion in Zaragoza last September. We were also proud to have helped Shanghai for its bidding for the World Expo 2010 in Paris as early as 2001. We helped Shanghai to prepare its presentation and felt proud for the city’s success.
To be frank, up to now, the Expo 2010 may not be on top of the agenda of the world media, as the Olympic Games in Beijing last August did attract a lot of attention, and after the Olympics came the economic crisis. But I am positive that with the 2010 event coming closer, there will be greater and rising interests from foreign media. They will be quite interested in the theme of the Expo and how China and Shanghai will be able to develop such a huge project.

Introduction of Expo 2010 Shanghai China Forums

Forum is one of the most direct ways to explore the Expo theme and carry forward the spiritual heritage of the Expo.
World Expo 2010 Shanghai China will serve as a platform for the exchange and promotion of ideas, successful practices and technologies of "urban sustainable development" and discussion of practices and innovations in terms of urbanization, education and health care in rural areas of developing countries. This will include the forecast of challenges facing urban development and possible solutions.
Forums will be categorized into summit forums, theme forums and public forums.
summit forums will host heads of government, mayors of major metropolises, international celebrities and decision-makers in business, academic and cultural fields and mainstream media, where the concept of urban development and the relationship between livable cities, globalization and sustainable development will be discussed from a macro perspective. The theme is "Challenges in Global Urbanization" and the estimated attendees will reach 300 to 350 persons.
Theme forums are more technical and instructive. Theme forums will gather elites from all walks of life, to explore the urban system, structure and way of management of a modern city from a meso perspective and generate a group of ideas by drawing on their expertise. Theme forums will be held at least once per month during Expo Shanghai.
Public forums are special open forums. The forum intends to discuss, from a micro perspective, detailed issues for urban development and improve the participation awareness of the public through various events. The forum will be held for 100 times before and during the Expo.

Brief Introduction of World Expo Shanghai

World Expositions are galleries of human inspirations and thoughts. Since 1851 when the Great Exhibition of Industries of All Nations was held in London, the World Expositions have attained increasing prominence as grand events for economic, scientific, technological and cultural exchanges, serving as an important platform for displaying historical experience, exchanging innovative ideas, demonstrating esprit de corps and looking to the future.
With a long civilisation, China favours international exchange and loves world peace. China owes its successful bid for the World Exposition in 2010 to the international community's support for and confidence in its reform and opening-up. The Exposition will be the first registered World Exposition in a developing country, which gives expression to the expectations the world's people place on China's future development.
So what will Expo 2010 Shanghai China deliver to the world? There is no doubt the Chinese people will present to the world a successful, splendid and unforgettable exposition.
Expo 2010 Shanghai China will be a great event to explore the full potential of urban life in the 21st century and a significant period in urban evolution. Fifty-five percent of the world population is expected to live in cities by the year 2010. The prospect of future urban life, a subject of global interest, concerns all nations, developed or less developed, and their people. Being the first World Exposition on the theme of city, Exposition 2010 will attract governments and people from across the world, focusing on the theme "Better City, Better Life." For its 184 days, participants will display urban civilisation to the full extent, exchange their experiences of urban development, disseminate advanced notions on cities and explore new approaches to human habitat, lifestyle and working conditions in the new century. They will learn how to create an eco-friendly society and maintain the sustainable development of human beings.
Expo 2010 Shanghai China will centre on innovation and interaction. Innovation is the soul, while cultural interaction is an important mission of the World Expositions. In the new era, Expo 2010 Shanghai China will contribute to human-centred development, scientific and technological innovation, cultural diversity and win-win cooperation for a better future, thus composing a melody with the key notes of highlighting innovation and interaction in the new century.
Expo 2010 Shanghai China will also be a grand international gathering. On the one hand, we shall endeavour to attract about 200 nations and international organisations to take part in the exhibition as well as 70 million visitors from home and abroad, ensuring the widest possible participation in the history of the World Expositions. On the other hand, we will put Expo 2010 Shanghai China in a global perspective and do our best to encourage the participation and gain the understanding and support of various countries and peoples, in order to turn Expo 2010 Shanghai China into a happy reunion of people from all over the world.
In addition, Expo 2010 Shanghai China will offer a wonderful opportunity for cross-culture dialogues. Before the conclusion of the Exposition, a "Shanghai Declaration" will be issued. This declaration, hopefully a milestone in the history of the World Expositions, will epitomise the insights to be offered by the participants and embody people's ideas for future cooperation and development and extensive common aspirations, thereby leaving a rich spiritual legacy of urban development to people throughout the world.
The Chinese Government will go to great lengths to make Expo 2010 Shanghai China a special event that carries on traditions and opens a new vista into the future. Our motto is: "Keeping in mind the next 60 years' development while preparing for the six months' Exposition." We count on the continuing attention, support and participation of all the peace-loving countries.

Shanghai Exhibition in Urban Best Practices Area Shanghai-EcoHousing

Case: “Shanghai-EcoHousing”
Location: Residential Case Group in North UBPA
Building Area: Around 3,000 Square Meters
Key Words: Ecological, Environmental Protection, Zero Energy Consumption
Case Prototype:
“Shanghai-EcoHousing” is developed on the basis of the first ecological demonstration building in China, which is located in Minhang District, the city of Shanghai. As a “zero energy consumption” building, it features the efficient utilization of solar energy. The large solar panels on top of the roof can provide energy for the whole building.
The louver outside the window, the roller shutter out of the glass curtain, and the movable awning out of the balcony, all in red color, constitute the “outer sunshade system”, which can fend off the sunshine, thus lowering the temperature by insulating against heat, in hot summer.
The blue tubes spreading over the wall are geothermal heat pumps that use geothermal energy to regulate the indoor temperature. The fluid flowing in the tubes elevates the geo-heat from the underground soil to raise the indoor temperature, just like a central air-conditioning system.
Highlights of Technology:
“Shanghai-EcoHousing” will take advantage of many green, environment-friendly and energy-saving technologies, such as the integrated solar energy system, natural lighting / ventilation and LED lighting facilities, techniques for comprehensive utilization of rainwater and sewage, building automation system, and shallow-layer geothermal energy application technology, to reflect the eco-housing philosophy of sustainable development while searching for the universally-recognized housing styles.
Highlights of the Site:
The exhibition will highlight the identity of participation, experience and fun in eco-housing technologies, to weave “a travel through time and space” with clues in the past, present and future.
“Shanghai-EcoHousing”, to satisfy such functional requirements as large visitor flows, will make intelligent use of the underground space to accommodate exhibition halls and a cinema on water , for the purpose of tracing the evolution of housing and seeking the eco-life styles in the future.

Discover the Suspended "Box of Energy"

Design release: Dec 19, 2008
Design philosophy: Lit up Dream with Innovation
Designer: Zhao Xiaojun, designer of 6 Olympic stadiums, including the "Water Cube"
Highlight 1: Box of Energy
The Energy Box, located in the center of the pavilion, has illusive lights, shadows and colors. It is a crystal of the entire building. In day, it has flowing lighting and shadowing, with ever-changing projecting and recessing feels; at night, it is like the Milky Way with shooting stars. The grand firework-like scenes can be viewed by visitors in front of the pavilion, or on the square and distant sidewalks.
Highlight 2: Abstract Architectural Texture
Each side of the pavilion is covered by mysterious lattice texture with wide and narrow lines at solid and void intervals, showing off abstractness and modernity. The inspiration comes from the urban layouts and electric power grids, and implies safety, quality, cleanness, and reliability which are made available through innovation. The dense holes on the surface of the pavilion are simple but subtle lighting and environmental protection devices, to provide natural lighting for certain areas within the pavilion.
Highlight 3: Innovation & Environmental Protection
The design incorporates a number of new technologies and materials, such as the Himawari 12-lens sunlight collecting system providing lighting for the basement and VIP meeting zone. The solar photovoltaic energy generation system and the sunlight collecting system incisively depict the concept of sustainability of urban power grids. The passageways elaborately introduce summer winds in Shanghai to give an S-shaped cool corridor, "Summer Wind Hunter" .
Highlight 4: Intimacy with "Power"
Under the Energy Box is the high-tech transformer substation specially built for the Expo, and it is called the "Energy Core". The floor is completely transparent and allows visitors to have a close look into power grid facilities. Curious children will have the opportunity to learn secrets of a substation through an intimate but safe distance.

The Dream Work after "Water Cube"

Zhao Xiaojun
Education: Department of Architecture, Tianjin University
National Grade A Registered Architect
Director and General Manager of China Construction Design International (CCDI) Shenzhen
Founder Member of World Association of Chinese Architects
Chief Designer (Chinese Party) of Water Cube for Beijing Olympics 2008
On December 19, 2008, Zhao Xiaojun, the Chief Designer of “Water Cube” for Beijing Olympics appeared at the press conference held at Expo 2010 Shanghai China Exhibition Center, to unveil the architectural appearance of the State Grid Pavilion for Expo 2010.
According to Zhao, State Grid Pavilion is another piece of dream work he designed ever. It could be a bit calm, but it is sure to have a nature of still vitality and passion.
Creation is a process to release the art inspiration from the deep of soul
Zhao never denies such a fact that “Water Cube” makes him be in the spotlight. However, he would rather go out of the identity of a designer, back to tranquility and seek for a satisfaction of soul.
Leading his team in designing the State Grid Pavilion, Zhao enjoyed such an experience again. “A great architectural work shall have its soul, or it would be nothing but a steel structure.”
He explained, “Olympics and World Expo are of great importance to everyone. Olympic Games is full of the passion and burst of athletic sports, while World Expo is a splendid stage for creative ideas and works, to convey people’s expectations and dreams. Therefore, comparing with Olympics, World Expo is more rational, with more focus on the people’s affections.”
From “Water Cube” to “Energy Box”
Previous world expositions have created many great architectural works, which led the trend of that time and became forever classics. People will always take delight in talking about these Expo buildings.
How about the pavilions for Expo 2010? According to Zhao, the State Grid Pavilion will feature an energy centre to serve the Expo Site.Zhao and his team transfused a brand new identity to the pavilion, “green, energy-saving, and affinity”.
Just like water and air, electricity is indispensable to people’s daily life. The State Grid Pavilion will take visitors to have close contact with electricity.
In the eyes of Zhao, each building is a living structure. People’s gracious affections, such as selflessness and altruism, are blended into Zhao’s creation. The power generated by the “energy box” will be strong enough to creat a win-win and happy harmony.

Junko Koshino: in the Fashion World

Junko Koshino is a world famous fashion designer. She has created many outstanding works for World Expos and enjoyed a good reputation in the Expo world.
She designed uniforms for the Discover Life Pavilion and Pepsi Pavilion at Expo 1970 Osaka Japan.
She designed uniforms for Japan Government Pavilion at Expo 1985 Tsukuba Japan.
In 2008, she was nominated as the image ambassador in Japan for promotion of Expo 2010 Shanghai China.
Why Junko Koshino?
Junko Koshino was nominated, along with Tanimura Shinji (the notable musician) and Ai Fukuhara (the famous table tennis player), as the image ambassador for promotion of Expo 2010, although her reputation in China is far behind the other two image ambassadors. Why is Junko Koshino so lucky to be selected? With this question, our reporter starts the interview with this Expo Expert in the fashion world.
During the talk, the reporter is astonished at Junko Koshino’s profound understanding of the deep tie between the fashion world and the Expo, through the Yamato-e and japan ware that were all the rage at the World Exposition in Paris, and the luxury Louis Vuitton’s delicate relationship with World Expo, as well as the Expo heritages, such as Grand Palais (Grand Palace). In a word, the famous fashion designer is really an Expo fan.
Actually, Junko Koshino has a deep tie with China. In 1985, she held the largest fashion show of the time in Beijing, to bring the modern fashion styles into China. In 2005, she came to Beijing again, to organize her brand fashion show under the theme “Sino-Japan Fashionable Life & Cultural Exchange – 20th Anniversary in Beijing”.
Junko Koshino, the well-known fashion designer, has established the traditional ties with the Expo and China, which inevitably makes her a part of Expo 2010.
Junko Koshino has her own views upon the image ambassadors, “Tanimura Shinji is the emissary in music, Ai Fukuhara represents the extension of exchange in sports, and I signify the fashion world. Music, sports, and fashion, are all critical elements of people’s daily life in China. We will make efforts to contribute to Expo 2010 by using our respective expertise.” She adds, “I like playing table tennis. I played a game with Ai Fukuhara when she was four years old. My son and son of Tanimura Shinji studied in the same music school.” It is quite expected that the three image ambassadors will give a wonderful performance in promoting Expo 2010.
Enjoy the Process
From a designer’s point of view, whicht color will be attributed to the city theme of Expo 2010? Thinking for a while, she indicates that there is no set color could be applied for the theme, for city development is a dynamic concept, which represents a color blending process.
Junko Koshino hails the Expo theme “Better City, Better Life”. She’s so excited to see the Expo Site under construction on her way through the Lupu Bridge. “It is admirable that people here, at the city center, are so lucky to have the chance to witness the construction process on the Expo Site.”
In the view of Junko Koshino, either the Expo Site construction or urban development could be deemed as a course. She really advocates and enjoys the beauty and quality of such course. “The Expo Site under construction itself is the best reflection of the better city, which is closer to everyone.”
Meanwhile, Junko Koshino takes out a photo album, which collects the photos of Shanghai World Financial Center under construction that were taken by her and her husband when they visited the adjacent Jin Mao Tower in 2007. Attaching importance to the development process seems to be the common value of the couple for a long time.
What will she bring for Expo 2010?
The reporter is very curious about what Junko Koshino will bring us at Expo 2010.
“You may find out my design on T-shirts”, says Junko Koshino with a smile on her face. Are you excited to hear about this? The design plan has not been frozen yet; however, it would not stop people from expecting for her striking work again.
Japan, as an active participant in world expositions, has accumulated rich experiences in organizing and participating in such great events. Junko Koshino makes a sincere promise that she has an obligation and will work closely with the Expo Organizer to promote Expo 2010. In the meantime, she will give proper proposals and advices to the Expo Organizer with her previous Expo experiences in some relevant fields, particularly in the fashion world. “Of course, I’ll try my best in the areas of my expertise.”

For the the Urban Best Practices Area of the World Expo 2010, Germany's Hamburg will build an energy self-sufficient building which will have zero gas emissions, Carsten-Ludwig Luedemann, Hamburg's state secretary said today during a meeting with the organizer.
Called "Hamburg Home," the building will use renewable energy to create a desirable environment and it will not have heating facilities or air-conditioning inside.
"It will incorporate both living and office functions and will be highly sustainable and eco-friendly." Luedemann said Hamburg hopes to showcase its efforts in energy efficiency and in helping to curb global warming.
Luedemann said the inspiration for the proposal came from the city's "HafenCity" project, where old buildings on the waterfront of the River Elbe are being renovated into modern environmentally friendly buildings with advanced technology.
The program is one of the largest urban restructuring projects in Europe in the 21st century and will take another 10 years to complete. It involves residential and commercial sections.
Luedemann said the cost of this kind of building is 5 to 10 percent more than for a traditional structure.
