Vision on sub-downtown centers' growth explored

Experts in architecture and urban planning from home and abroad yesterday gathered in Shanghai's Zhenru Town to share their visions on the development of sub-downtown centers.

Zhenru hosted the Expo-themed forum as the town in Putuo District is undergoing an ambitious project that will turn it into one of the city's four major sub-downtown centers.

Offices, hotels, parking lots and green spaces are being built in Zhenru.

During the forum, famous architect Ma Qingyun, and Steffen Lehmann, who holds the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Urban Development for Asia and the Pacific, elaborated on the future development trend of sub-downtown centers.

Other experts and professors shared their experience in developing sub-downtown centers or talked about the positioning of sub-downtown centers and their sustainable development model.

Winning designs of a promotion slogan and an environmental art design competition launched by Zhenru government were also awarded at the forum.

Zhu Yonglei, deputy director general of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination, said the fruits of Expo-themed forums will not only leave a legacy for the 2010 World Expo, but also lead the way to future development of cities.
