Poland unveils Expo pavilion design

Poland has unveiled the architectural design for its national pavilion in World Expo Shanghai 2010, presenting a geometrical structure covered with paper-cutting pattern.
The design of the 3,000-square-meter Poland Pavilion is the winning entry chosen from 20 candidates in the designing competition.
"We've tried to analyze the functional qualities of the pavilion designs, primarily the aesthetics, the concept and color," said Anna Kaminska, commissioner general of the Polish section.
During daytime, the exhibition hall will be filled with light filtering through paper-cutting patterns. And at night, the pavilion will shine with different colors.
An extending roof of the pavilion will create an open-air restaurant and a shelter to shadow the visitors queuing outside the pavilion.
The exhibition area will be divided into several sections for small expositions, concerts and shops.
Poland signed the participation contract with the Expo organizers last November and said it will showcase a theme mainly focuses on their famous composer Frederic Chopin.
"Chopin is more than a composer, he represents the nature of the Polish nation, but we will have a very modern interpretation on his masterpieces," said Kaminska.

France today unveiled a national pavilion with a simple look, but huge budget, for World Expo 2010 Shanghai.
The model of the selected design has been on display in the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, along with other three prize-awarded works in the design competition of France Pavilion.
The final design "the Sensual City," selected from 49 candidates, presented a simple building with a big French-style garden inside. Surrounded by water, it appears to be floating, said Jose Freches, president of COFRES, the company in charge of France's participation.
The French government has allocated a record 50 million euros (552 million yuan) budget for the national pavilion. "As far as I know, it is the highest among all participants," said Xu Bo, director of the International Participation Department of the Bureau of World Expo Coordination.
At least 80 percent of the total budget will be used in constructing the 6,000-square-meter pavilion, said Freches.
The France Pavilion, designed by Jacques Ferrier and his team, provides a unique opportunity to reinforce France's image in China. All the talents and financial forces will be gathered to make it real, said French President Nicolas Sarkozy in a statement when he decided to pick this design.
The France Pavilion is unique in terms of both form and technologies. It will present France's contribution in the sustainable urban development for one of the biggest economic metropolises in the planet, Sarkozy said.
He said the pavilion would use the most advanced building materials and environmental protection technology. It will be a shining example of energy efficiency and recycling techniques, according to the official Website of French Pavilion.
Though the design had already been selected, the country still brought all the four finalists in the design competition to Shanghai.
The applicants have spent a lot of time on the pavilion and all of them are excellent and innovative both in form and concept, Freches said.
"We want to listen to the opinions of Shanghai residents, about the content of the exhibition in the France Pavilion especially. We want to make it a pavilion for Chinese people."
The other three exhibiting projects are called "The Pavilion of France," "The Pavilion of Diversities," and" The Sky of Descartes."
The exhibition will be open until April 6.

Macau Expo promotion a big success

A week-long exhibit of Macau's "rabbit lantern" Expo pavilion and Tak Seng On Pawnshop, its Urban Best Practice Area showcase, drew big crowds at the Expo Exhibition Center in downtown Shanghai.
More than 15,000 visitors, including 52 groups, have toured the center on Huaihai Road since the promotion campaign started on February 9. The exhibit featured photos and models of the special administrative region's pavilions.

Many people expressed best wishes for the Macau Pavilion as well as Expo 2010. A visitor who declined to be named said he was impressed by the exhibit, as the idea of a "rabbit lantern" mixes traditional Chinese culture with creativity.
It conveys Chinese culture and, at the same time, lets people see the unique charm of Macau, he added.
The "rabbit lantern" pavilion will present a mythological world via multi-media technology. In Chinese mythology, the jade rabbit is a guide to Nantianmen, the door leading to a fairyland. The administrative region will also rebuild its Tak Seng On Pawnshop, Macau's largest pawnshop in the first half of the 20th century, in the UBPA sector.
About 1,300 visitors answered questions regarding the exhibit. Fifty people won prizes.

Construction began yesterday on the Luxembourg Pavilion for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. It is the third national pavilion to begin construction. There are less than 450 days to go until the 2010 event.

The pavilion's design concept is "forest and fortress," inspired by the literal meaning of the Chinese term for Luxembourg, said the pavilion's architect.
The pavilion, which will cost US$9 million, has a floor space of 3,000 square meters, one of the smallest plans among all the national pavilions ? fitting for one of the world's smallest countries. "Small Is Beautiful" will be a recurring theme for the pavilion.

Construction of the pavilion will be completed at the end of October and exhibits will be installed by next February.
"Time is rather urgent," said Thomas Rohdewald, director of the pavilion.
So far, 185 countries and 46 organizations have confirmed their participation in the six-month Expo.

Expo announces sculpture plan solicitation

Shanghai Expo organizers yesterday launched a worldwide search for teams to find and arrange sculptures for the World Expo site.
Organizers have planned to set up 200 sculptures in four areas of the 5.28-square-kilometer site -- at the eight main entrances, an art gallery in Expo Axis, the square of old Jiangnan Shipyard and the park along the Huangpu River in Pudong.
"We hope the teams can submit innovative plans which coincide with the Shanghai Expo theme -- Better City, Better Life," said Huang Jianzhi, deputy director of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.
The organizers also hoped to see one or two "landmark sculptures" in the plans that could become highlights of the Expo site, Huang said.
The city would keep some as permanent sculptures within the site after the Expo.
Some of the others would be moved into the downtown area, said Wu Jiang, deputy director of Shanghai Urban Planning Administration Bureau.
The deadline for proposal submissions is May 31.

The Third Participants Meeting for the World Exposition Shanghai China 2010

In order to better serve the participants, brief them in detail on the latest progress of the preparation work of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China, and answer all kinds of questions on participation issues, the Bureau of the Shanghai World Expo Coordination has decided to hold the 3rd Participants Meeting in Shanghai on November 13 and 14, 2008.
The invitation letter and meeting agenda have already been sent to countries and international organizations who have confirmed their participations through the Chinese Embassies and Consulates abroad.
The Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination welcomes Commissioner General of the Section of countries and international organizations to attend the Meeting. If the Commissioner General of the section has not been appointed yet, the representative designated by the relevant authority of countries and international organizations is welcomed instead. Considering the fact that 221 countries and international organizations have confirmed their participation to the Shanghai Expo, the Bureau wish the attendee could be limited to 1 or 2 persons.
The application for the Meeting could be done either through Chinese Embassies and Consulates overseas or through online registration at the official website of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China.

Announcement on the Solicitation of Public Catering Service Providers for Zone C of the Site of Expo 2010 Shanghai China

Expo 2010 is a large and high-end event for economic, cultural and scientific-technological exchanges that involves many countries and nationalities around the world. The Expo is expected to attract 70 million visitors. In order to meet the needs of catering operation and management during the Expo, the Expo Bureau now openly solicits public catering service providers (including catering management enterprises and catering operation enterprises) for Zone C of the Site of Expo 2010 Shanghai China.
1. Name of Solicitation Project

2. Soliciting Party and Solicited Parties
Soliciting party: Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination
Solicited parties: Chinese and foreign catering management enterprises and catering operation enterprises
3. Aim of Solicitation
The open solicitation is designed to select the qualified catering management enterprises and catering operation enterprises to provide safe, hygienic, quality and convenient catering service to the visitors, participants and related staff.
4. Scope of Solicitation
The Expo Site has several catering properties. The catering properties covered by this solicitation are those in plots C04-G01, C07-G02 and C10-G14, which are qualified for solicitation. The selected catering management enterprises or catering operation enterprises will legally use the catering properties in these plots with compensation and will operate and manage the related catering projects according to the regulations of the industry and the Site.
5. Overview of Properties
(1) Locations of Properties
The catering properties in plots C04-G01, C07-G02 and C10-G14 are located in Zone C, lying in the Houtan area of Pudong District west of the Lupu Bridge (see Appendix 1 for detailed information). Specifically, the plot C04-G01 is close to the entrance of Zone C, where there will be a 10-hectare large public amusement ground. The plot C07-G02 is located at the main passage of visitors and vehicles in the Site, and plot C10-G14 is located at the entrance of the Site on Changqing Road.
The three catering property combinations in the three plots are respectively located in the pavilions of American countries from the other side of the Pacific, the pavilions of European countries with rich regional tastes, and the pavilions of African countries. All of them are close to the area squares and the main passages of visitors and vehicles. The nearby national pavilion area of the European, American and African countries will present unique architectural landscapes (see Appendix 2 for detailed information) and diverse and colorful scientific, cultural and ethnic civilizations, and will attract large numbers of visitors for sightseeing and playing. In the meantime, the convenient transportation of the main passages of visitors and vehicles and the concentration of visitors at the two entrances will bring enormous business opportunities to the catering enterprises in these areas.
(2) Conditions of Properties
The floor spaces of the catering properties in the three plots of C04-G01, C07-G02 and C10-G14 are respectively 1,275m2 (two storey), 7,250m2 (three storey) and 7,250m2 (three storey). Their total floor space is 15,775m2, accounting for about one-fifth of the total planning floor space for catering facilities in the Expo Site. They are all non-permanent light-steel structures, having connections for water, sewer, power, gas and air-conditioning facilities.
The industrial forms of the solicited catering enterprises include take-out fast food, Chinese fast food, Western fast food, food court, brand-name tea house, theme restaurant, and special coffee and beer hut.
6. Qualifications of Solicited Parties
(1) The solicited parties should be the corporate entities inside and outside China, which have been formally incorporated according to the laws of the countries where they are registered, and have valid durations.
(2) The solicited parties must have the industrial qualifications and sanitary licenses required for fulfilling this solicitation project. A catering management enterprise must have a registered capital of more than 5 million yuan and annual operational revenue of more than 50 million yuan, while a catering operation enterprise must have a registered capital of more than 100,000 yuan and annual operational revenue of more than 1 million yuan.
(3) The solicited parties must have complete quality control systems for food operation.
(4) The solicited parties must have operated for three years running and have never had major food safety accidents.
(5) They must still engage in catering management or catering operation inside and outside China.
(6) Preferential consideration will be given to the solicited parties that have large food courts in operation and experience in successfully accommodating large events.
(7) This project allows joint response in the form of corporate alliance, but one member of such alliance should work as the main solicited party. While this main solicited party must meet the above requirements for the solicited parties, all the members of the alliance must confirm the main solicited party and present their Alliance Agreement.
7. Method for Participation
Only those that have passed the preliminary qualification examination shall have the right to participate in this solicitation activity and enjoy the priority to participate in the ensuing catering solicitation projects for other plots.
All the solicited parties should download and fill out the Preliminary Qualification Examination Form for Solicited Party (see Appendix 3) and submit the form to the Solicitation Working Group within the time limit specified in this announcement.
The Solicitation Working Group will notify the preliminary qualifiers to participate in the solicitation briefing.
8. Time Limit
8:00am December 27, 2008 – 17:00pm January 5, 2009.
